Taxes
Understand your tax bill instead of fearing it.
Almost everyone misunderstands how brackets work, and the misunderstanding costs real money in avoided raises and misjudged contributions. Cipili explains the mechanics, in plain English.

Overview
Tax is the largest annual expense in most households and the least understood. The single most common error, thinking a raise into a higher bracket can leave you with less, is a misreading of a system that is not actually complicated at the level most people need.
Cipili walks through how your bill is put together, the difference between your marginal and effective rate, and how the tax-advantaged accounts fit in. It is educational, not a tax return and not tax advice.
Only the top slice is taxed at 22%. A raise never leaves you with less.
Key benefits
Brackets, finally clear
Rates apply to slices of income, not the whole of it. Once that lands, the myth that a raise can leave you worse off disappears for good.
Marginal against effective
Your top rate and your actual rate are different numbers, and confusing them leads to bad decisions. Cipili shows both, calculated from your income.
Estimate your real bill
A plain estimate of what you owe from the figures you enter, with the arithmetic visible rather than a number appearing from nowhere.
Honest about its limits
Cipili does not do personalized tax advice and says so. For anything with real stakes it points you to a CPA, which is the correct answer rather than a hedge.
Tax planning
Understanding the timing and the levers: what is deducted before tax, what a credit does that a deduction does not, and why the same dollar can be worth quite different amounts depending on where it goes. Educational framing throughout, so you can have a better conversation with a professional rather than replace one.
Tax-efficient investing
Why the account you hold something in can matter as much as what you hold. Traditional against Roth treatment, what tax-deferred and tax-free actually mean over decades, and how an HSA is treated. Cipili explains the mechanics of these containers. It does not tell you which to choose, because that is personalized tax advice and it requires a licensed professional who knows your full situation.
Educational tax guidance
Every figure is an estimate built from what you enter, with its assumptions stated. Cipili is not a tax preparer, is not a CPA, and does not file anything. On anything unusual, multi-state income, equity compensation, self-employment, a major life change, it will tell you to get a professional rather than guess with you.
- Estimates, always labeled as estimates
- Assumptions shown next to every number
- High-stakes situations routed to a licensed professional
Frequently asked questions
Can Cipili file my taxes?
No. Cipili does not prepare or file returns and is not a substitute for a tax professional.
Is this tax advice?
No. It is education and estimates. Personalized tax advice requires a licensed professional such as a CPA or enrolled agent, and Cipili will say so when your question crosses that line.
Does it handle state taxes?
The explanations cover federal mechanics. State rules vary widely, and state-specific questions are exactly the kind Cipili routes to a professional.
Why does it refuse some questions?
Because the boundary between education and regulated advice is a real one with real consequences. Cipili is built to stay on the right side of it, and that guardrail is enforced in the application rather than left to the model to decide.
