Insurance

Work out what coverage you need, minus the sales pitch.

Insurance is sold by people paid on commission, which makes impartial explanation hard to come by. Cipili has no policy to sell you, so it can just explain how each kind works and roughly how much you need.

Overview

Insurance protects against the losses you could not absorb. That principle sounds obvious and is quietly violated constantly, by people carrying extended warranties on a laptop while holding no disability cover on the income that pays for everything.

Cipili covers the five kinds that matter for most households, explains the terms that make policies hard to compare, and gives you a rough sense of how much coverage your situation calls for.

Rough life cover estimate: $480,000. Based on income replacement over 8 years plus recorded debts, minus existing cover. An estimate, not an underwriting decision.

Key benefits

The vocabulary, first

Deductible, premium, out-of-pocket maximum, coinsurance, rider, term against whole. Policies are hard to compare largely because the words are unfamiliar. Cipili fixes that first.

Rough coverage estimates

How much life cover your dependants would actually need, estimated from your income, debts, and household, with the method shown rather than hidden behind a form.

Gaps and overlaps

Both directions matter. Being underinsured on the thing that would ruin you, and paying twice for cover you already have through work, are equally common.

Nobody is on commission

Cipili earns from subscriptions. There is no policy it benefits from you buying, which is why it can tell you when you probably do not need one.

Health

The plan mechanics that decide what you actually pay: deductible, coinsurance, and the out-of-pocket maximum, and how a low premium with a high deductible compares to the reverse depending on how much care you expect to use. Plus what an HSA is and which plans permit one.

Auto

What liability limits really mean, why the state minimum is a legal floor rather than a recommendation, and how a deductible choice trades a certain small cost against an uncertain large one.

Home and renters

The difference between replacement cost and actual cash value, what a standard policy excludes, floods and earthquakes typically among them, and why renters insurance is usually one of the cheapest sensible things a person can buy.

Life

Term against permanent, in plain terms, and a rough estimate of how much cover your household would need based on income replacement, debts, and dependants. The estimate shows its working so you can adjust the assumptions to your situation.

Disability

The coverage most people skip and statistically are most likely to claim on. What short-term and long-term policies do, what your employer probably provides, own-occupation against any-occupation definitions, and why that distinction decides whether a policy pays.

Frequently asked questions

Does Cipili sell insurance?

No. Cipili is not an insurance agent or broker and earns nothing from any policy you buy.

Will it tell me which policy to buy?

It explains how the types work and estimates roughly how much cover your situation calls for. Choosing a specific policy is a decision for you, and for a licensed agent or adviser if the stakes warrant one.

How accurate are the coverage estimates?

They are modeled estimates from the figures you provide, using a method shown on the page. They are a starting point for a conversation, not an underwriting decision.

Does insurance affect my Financial Score?

Yes, it is one of the ten components. Its weight rises with your life stage, since a household with dependants and a mortgage has far more riding on coverage than a student does.
